Title: The Big Picture Pdf On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself

Praise for The Big PictureIncluded on Brain Picking’s “The Greatest Science Books of 2016” ListIncluded on NPR Science Friday’s “The Best Science Books of 2016” List“Weaving the threads of astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, and philosophy into a seamless narrative tapestry, Sean Carroll enthralls us with what we’ve figured out in the universe and humbles us with what we don’t yet understand. Yet in the end, it’s the meaning of it all that feeds your soul of curiosity.”—Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey“With profound intelligence and lucid, unpretentious language, Sean Carroll beautifully articulates the worldview suggested by contemporary naturalism. Thorny issues like free will, the direction of time, and the source of morality are clarified with elegance and insight. The Big Picture shows how the scientific worldview enriches our understanding of the universe and ourselves. A reliable account of our knowledge of the universe, it is also a serene meditation on our need for meaning. This is a book that should be read by everybody.”—Carlo Rovelli, author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics"Vivid...impressive....Splendidly informative."—The New York Times Book Review“Never hectoring, always tolerant, the author presents a seductively attractive picture of a universe whose ultimate laws lie within our grasp....[Carroll] gives us a highly enjoyable and lucid tour through a wide range of topics....Even if you don’t agree with what he says, you are unlikely to be enraged by such an urbane and engaging lecturer; more likely, you will be enthralled.”—The Wall Street Journal“A nuanced inquiry into ‘how our desire to matter fits in with the nature of reality at its deepest levels,’ in which Carroll offers an assuring dose of what he calls ‘existential therapy’ reconciling the various and often seemingly contradictory dimensions of our experience.”—Maria Popova, Brain Pickings“[The Big Picture is] a tour de force that offers a comprehensive snapshot of the human situation in our infinitely strange universe, and it does this with highly accessible language and engaging storytelling.”—Salon“Sean Carroll’s holistic vision accommodates the sciences and the humanities and has a high probability of provoking readers into clarifying their own views about the complex relations among science, religion, and morality.”—The Times Literary Supplement“The Big Picture impresses. Carroll is a lively and sympathetic author who writes as well about biology and philosophy as he does about his own field of physics.”—Financial Times“Carroll is the perfect guide on this wondrous journey of discovery. A brilliantly lucid exposition of profound philosophical and scientific issues in a language accessible to lay readers.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Carroll presents a means through which people can better understand themselves, their universe, and their conceptions of a meaningful life.”—Publishers Weekly“Guides us through several centuries’ worth of scientific discoveries to show how they have shaped our understanding and indeed how the laws of nature are linked to the most fundamental human questions of life, death, and our place in the cosmos.”—Library Journal“Intensely insightful.”—Scientific American“With its delightful blend of evocative love paens and four-dimensional integrals, The Big Picture offers a uniquely physical vision of life's meaning. This is poetry.”—Physics Today“[Carroll] sets out to show how various phenomena, including thought, choice, consciousness, and value, hang together with the scientific account of reality that has been developed in physics in the past 100 years. He attempts to do all this without relying on specialized jargon from philosophy and physics and succeeds spectacularly in achieving both aims.”—Science“True to the grand scope of its title....Anyone who enjoys asking big questions will find a lot to consider.”—Booklist“Language philosophy, quantum mechanics, general relativity—they’re all in The Big Picture. Sean Carroll is a fantastically erudite and entertaining writer.”—Elizabeth Kolbert, author of Pulitzer Prize–winner The Sixth Extinction  “From the big bang to the meaning of human existence, The Big Picture is exactly that—a magisterial, yet deeply fascinating, grand tour through the issues that really matter. Blending science and philosophy, Sean Carroll gives us a humane perspective on the universe and our place in it. As gripping as it is important, The Big Picture can change the way you think about the world.”—Neil Shubin, author of Your Inner Fish “In this timely exploration of the universe and its mysteries—both physical and metaphysical—Sean Carroll illuminates the world around us with clarity, beauty and, ultimately, with much needed wisdom.”—Deborah Blum, director of the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT and author of The Poisoner’s Handbook  “Sean Carroll is a leading theoretical cosmologist with the added ability to write about his subject with unusual clarity, flare, and wit.”—Alan Lightman, author of The Accidental Universe and Einstein’s Dreams  “Until now you might have gotten away believing modern physics is about things either too small or too far away to care much about. But no more. Sean Carroll’s new book reveals how physicists’ quest to better understand the fundamental laws of nature has led to astonishing insights into life, the universe, and everything. Above all, a courageous book, and an overdue one.”—Sabine Hossenfelder, Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies“Instead of feeling humbled and insignificant when gazing upward on a clear starry night, Carroll takes us by the hand and shows us how fantastic the inanimate physical universe is and how special each animate human can be. It is lucid, spirited, and penetrating.”—Michael S. Gazzaniga, author of Who's in Charge? and Tales from Both Sides of the Brain“Sean Carroll’s lucid The Big Picture reveals how the universe works and our place in it. Carroll, a philosophically sophisticated physicist, discusses consciousness without gimmicks, and deftly shows how current physics is so solid that it rules out ESP forever.”—Steven Pinker, author of The Better Angels of Our Nature SEAN CARROLL is a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in 1993 from Harvard University. Recently, Carroll has worked on the foundations of quantum mechanics, the arrow of time, and the emergence of complexity. He has been awarded prizes and fellowships by the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the American Physical Society, the American Institute of Physics, and the Royal Society of London. His most recent award, in 2014, was from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Carroll has appeared on The Colbert Report (twice), PBS’s NOVA, and Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, and he frequently serves as a science consultant for film and television. He has been interviewed by various NPR shows, Scientific American, Wired, and The New York Times. He has given a TED talk on the multiverse that has more than one million views, and he has participated in a number of well-attended public debates concerning material in his new book, including one in New York City in 2014 with Eben Alexander.

The instant New York Times bestseller about humanity's place in the universe—and how we understand it.

A tour de force.Salon

Already internationally acclaimed for his elegant, lucid writing on the most challenging notions in modern physics, Sean Carroll is emerging as one of the greatest humanist thinkers of his generation as he brings his extraordinary intellect to bear not only on Higgs bosons and extra dimensions but now also on our deepest personal questions: Where are we? Who are we? Are our emotions, our beliefs, and our hopes and dreams ultimately meaningless out there in the void? Do human purpose and meaning fit into a scientific worldview?

In short chapters filled with intriguing historical anecdotes, personal asides, and rigorous exposition, readers learn the difference between how the world works at the quantum level, the cosmic level, and the human leveland then how each connects to the other. Carroll's presentation of the principles that have guided the scientific revolution from Darwin and Einstein to the origins of life, consciousness, and the universe is dazzlingly unique.

Carroll shows how an avalanche of discoveries in the past few hundred years has changed our world and what really matters to us. Our lives are dwarfed like never before by the immensity of space and time, but they are redeemed by our capacity to comprehend it and give it meaning.

The Big Picture is an unprecedented scientific worldview, a tour de force that will sit on shelves alongside the works of Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, Daniel Dennett, and E. O. Wilson for years to come.

An Excellent Book (With An Error) The Big Picture by Sean Carroll is an excellent book for anyone who wants a concise, understandable, and we'll written overview of modern science, with an emphasis on quantum mechanics and the philosophy of Poetic Naturalism. In this review I will focus on the philosophical side of his work and particularly his treatment of issues related to consciousness. As Carroll puts it, "Naturalism” claims that there is just one world, the natural world... (while) “Poetic” reminds us that there is more than one way of talking about the world . He describes these different ways of talking about the world as an "interconnected series of models appropriate at different levels". From this perspective, physics, chemistry, biology, and even psychology and sociology are simply different but useful ways of talking about the same world. From a scientific perspective, the most fundamental way of talking about the world is quantum field theory and, more specifically, the Core Theory, a term coined by Nobel Laueate Frank Wilczek. The Core Theory may be viewed as quantum field theory within a "domain of applicability" that includes most of the universe in which we live but excludes certain phenomena (e.g. dark matter, the big bang and black holes). Though the Core Theory is not the elusive Theory of Everything, it has been validated by so much data from so many experiments that it may be as close as we ever get to scientific certainty. As Carroll puts it, "We can be confident that the Core Theory, accounting for the substances and processes we experience in our everyday life, is correct. A thousand years from now we will have learned a lot more about the fundamental nature of physics, but we will still use the Core Theory to talk about this particular layer of reality". That is an audacious claim, but Carroll supports that claim with rigorous scientific reasoning.Carroll views higher level or "coarse grained theories" such as chemistry and biology as "emergent" and describes them as "... speaking different languages, but offering compatible descriptions of the same underlying phenomena in their respective domains of applicability". For example, chemistry and biology are emergent models of the universe, compatible with each other and the Core Theory, but with unique utilities in their particular domain of applicability. He briefly mentions supervenience, the view that emergent theories exist in an ontological hierarchy where higher level theories rest on more fundamental theories. For example, there could be no change at the level of biology without there being a change in the underlying chemistry. Similarly, there could be no change at the level of chemistry absent a change in the more fundamental physics. All of the models are interconnected and interdependent. Though each model has its own unique utility and coherence, that utility and coherence ultimately rests on a consistency with other more fundamental models.Unfortunately, Carroll's treatment of how different emergent models relate to each other alternates between autonomous or semiautonomous utility on the one hand and consistency with more fundamental models on the other. Though he warns readers not to begin a sentence in one model and end it in another, by moving between these two criteria for the validity of those models, he committs a very similar error. He frequently refers to consistency or compatibility among different models as essential, but also writes, "Within their respective domains of applicability, each theory is autonomous—complete and self-contained, neither relying on the other". This is just one example of where he suggests that the soundness of a model can be evaluated by its utility and internal coherence, and without reference to consistency with more fundamental models. In my opinion, when this level of credence is given to utility, one has entered a slippery slope that can lead to invalid ontological conclusions. Now, the criteria of utility does have its own domain of applicability, namely when the theory does not make ontological claims. For example, there are languages or ways of talking about everything from hair styling to stamp collecting that do not make claims about fundamental reality. Even Newtonian physics has its utility within its particular domain of applicability. In these areas, utility is a perfectly reasonable criteria. But when it comes to any model that claims to reflect, at some level, an underlying reality, utility by itself is an inadequate criteria.Another example is theism, a world view that Carroll does an excellent job demonstrating why it is not only unnecessary but a way of looking at the world but one that is ultimately inconsistent with the Core Theory. But if one evaluates the validity of theism, and particularly the theism embodied in major world religions such as Jewdaism, Christianity, and Islam, from the perspective of their utility, one is headed for an ontological train wreck. Who can deny the comfort (i.e. utility) that faith in a loving god and a blissful after life has given millions if not billions of people? But does that mean that such a world view is real in the same sense that the Core Theory is real? Of course not.The same logic applies to the role of consciousness in human behavior. Though there may be personal or social utility in the belief that conscious intent is responsible for human behavior, such a position is inconsistent with everything we know from cognitive science and everything we know about how the world works according to the Core Theory. Behavior emerges from complex brain activity, not inner experiences. The fact that our brain is responsible for both behavior and consciousness, at approximately the same time, gives rise to the illusion that conscious intent causes behavior. It is no more reasonable to claim that consciousness is responsible for behavior than to claim that a god is responsible for behavior or that a roosters crowing causes the sun to rise.Carroll tries to get around this by claiming that consciousness is just another way of talking about brain activity and the deeper layers of chemistry and physics. Unfortunately, reducing consciousness to a way of talking about experience fails to solve the Hard Problem. Consciousness is more than just a way of talking about brain states. It is dependent for its existence and form on those states, but is not identical to them. I do not claim to know what consciousness is, but whatever it is, it is more than words. Thus, poetic naturalism fails as a satisfactory philosophy of mind on two counts. First, it fails to give an adequate understanding of inner experience and secondly, it provides credence to the idea that consciousness is responsible for behavior. The first failure is understandable; the Hard Problem is hard for a reason and no one has yet come up with a satisfactory solution to it. As David Chalmers has said, that may take a hundred years. But Carroll should have seen the second failure coming. By allowing for the claim that consciousness can be responsible for behavior, he is opening the door for a new element in the Core Theory, an element he has argued persuasively does not exist. If it existed, this new element or property, somehow related to connsciousness, would make David Chalmers a very happy camper, but for the Sean Carroll who describes the Core Theory with such reverence, not so much.In conclusion, The Big Picture is an excellent book on the current status of science and his portrait of Poetic Natualism as a unifying philosophy. For those reasons, I highly recommend it to interested lay readers. However, I also urge those readers to be very careful in analyzing his treatment of consciousness. I believe he made a significant error in that analysis, though the error could very easily be my own.

Great purchase The test prep book has so many different resources you can use when studying for the SATOnly recommended for students with low or average SAT scores who need a basic introduction. I'm a Harvard grad, SAT perfect scorer and professional SAT tutor/coach since 2002. I am also a former SAT instructor for the Princeton Review, Inc., and the founder of the r/SATACTprep subreddit, with over 1,000 subscribers and growing.Although Princeton Review's "Cracking the SAT Premium Edition with 8 Practice Tests, 2020" provides a friendly, organized and accessible introduction to the SAT, top students will ultimately find it lacking. The 8 (non-official) SAT practice tests have little value compared to the 37 real, official College Board SATs and PSATs currently available on the web, and although the strategy advice is helpful for the novice student, high scorers (1200 and above) will find the Erica Meltzer and College Panda series of books to be more serious and thorough alternatives to preparing for the the Verbal and Math sections of the SAT, respectively. For my own personal SAT prep recommendations, you can google "SAT Action Plan: How to Study and Prepare for the SAT College Entrance Exam."Best of luck on the SAT and beyond,-BrianGreat product, will sugest for all my friends and family. Now includes 5 official practice exams (new test = Dec '17 ACT). Kindle is useless for printing. I’m a Harvard grad with honors and professional tutor/coach since 2002 (SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT). I have attained perfect scores on the ACT and SAT, with every question answered correctly, and 99% scores on the LSAT, GRE and GMAT (see my website for proof). I have been now teaching ACT for 21 years, ever since I worked as an instructor for Harvard's "Get Ready" community service test-prep program in the fall of 1998. I am the founder of McElroy Tutoring, who has employed over 500 tutors since 2002, and the r/SATACTprep subreddit, with nearly 1,000 subscribers and growing. I am also the former employer of another tutor with a highly-ranked review of this book that's very similar to mine. The Official ACT Prep Guide 2019-20 Edition (currently $22) is the essentially the exact same book as previous editions, such as the Official ACT Prep Guide 2018-19, the Official ACT Prep Guide 2018, and the Official ACT Prep Guide 2016-2017, other than the fact that it now includes a 5th paper test (the December 2017 ACT Form A10) and some minor updates/revisions. Yet this book continues to be the most essential preparation guide for the ACT, because it is the only source of official test questions in print—the practice ACTs in all other books are nothing more than subpar imitations of the real thing.Don’t bother downloading the Kindle edition, however. First of all, the proprietary Amazon Kindle e-reader file format is so highly “DRM”ed that it’s very difficult to convert your Kindle file to a format that is easy for printing like PDF—and even if you are somehow able to do so, you will notice that the print quality is poor and the text is too blurry. Thus, you should only buy the Kindle edition if you plan to do all of your reading off a screen, such as an iPad or an actual Kindle—but even then I wouldn’t recommend it. The ACT is still a paper test—at least for now—and as such should be studied for/practiced on paper. At best, the Kindle version of the book should be an add-on to the paper version—something portable and practical to supplement your studies on paper while you are away on vacation and don't want to lug this book around, for example.Of course, these 5 official ACTs are just scratching the surface of what’s out there in terms of official ACT practice material: as of this writing I’ve counted 75 official ACTs that are publicly available online—including some of the tests in this book. Although additional learning and strategy guides are also helpful, as are classes, videos and tutoring, the best place to start your ACT studies is with official practice questions.Overall, this book is a must-have for nearly any ACT prep student who appreciates the convenience of having 5 tests already printed out and ready to go with (somewhat helpful) answer explanations. However, the College Board's SAT book includes 8 practice tests, which I feel is a more reasonable number, so the main reason why I'm taking away one star is that there should be more practice exams. For my full, updated list of ACT prep recommendations, you can google "ACT Action Plan: How to Study and Prepare for the ACT College Entrance Exam - McElroy Tutoring."Best of luck on the ACT and beyond. Please leave questions or comments below, and I will be happy to respond.-BrianCan't beat authentic tests! 5 exams! Ok prep advice. Avoid Kindle Edition, unless you need it. (As this is an updated version of a previously published book, if you already purchased the 2018-2019 edition or earlier STOP— you likely have already seen 4/5 tests included and buying this may not be worth it! This is not a wholly new book!). I have purchased both the Kindle (notes at very bottom of review) and hard copy paperback editions.I’ve been tutoring the ACT for over a decade, have scored perfectly on it as an adult, and have coached a student to a perfect score, as well as many others to perfect scores on individual sections. I run a Youtube channel offering free ACT / SAT prep and college advice (SupertutorTV), have created an online prep course for the ACT, and have written two books on the math section of the ACT. In short, I know the ACT.When it comes to ACT prep, the number one advice I have for my students is to USE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS from the test maker. That means if you’re taking the ACT, and can afford nothing but one book, this is the number one resource I would recommend. The ACT test got a minor reboot in 2014 when ACT added probability items to the math section, reduced the number of science passages from 7 to 6, and added a dual reading passage section. The ACT has also revamped the essay a couple of times since 2014. This book reflects all those changes. Huzzah! Most notably, this version of the book includes a new, 5th test included in the book (awesome!). This is a recent test (form code A10 or 19MC5) originally administered in December 2017.Like the 2018 edition, but unlike 2017 and earlier editions, this book also includes a couple of other features touted on the cover:1) Access to an online question “bank” instead of printable pdf versions of the “bonus” questions that came with older versions of this guide (2015-2016 and 2016-2017 which has no date on the cover). Each book includes a scratch off code, so best to purchase new, not used, if you want to take advantage of these online questions. As before, these include around 100 of each subject matter pulled from the Real ACT Prep guide 3rd Edition that has since been taken out of print.2) Essays that reflect the latest version of the essay prompt (previously, the question required students to integrate “multiple perspectives” or all three perspectives. The newer version of the prompt is reworded and broader, asking students to incorporate “at least one” other perspective; other versions of the prep guide may not include the correct prompts for the essay). The table of contents / pagination appears to be identical to the previous book version until the portion of the book including the practice tests. Upon a quick skim it’s mostly identical, likely with some typo corrections.I gave this 5 stars BUT I do have a few minor quibbles about the book.My number one complaint is the fact that the question bank is still online only. Having the ability to PRINT the bonus questions made them much more valuable, and this was possible with some older version of this same guide.Studies have shown that students focus less when reading from screens and performance may be affected. Additionally, it’s best to prep using the same method you would use when actually taking the test. That makes your practice experience closer to your testing experience. Printing to paper gives students that experience. Doing questions in a question bank online doesn’t.Additionally, the OFFICIAL ACT PREP GUIDE (this book) and all versions of it borrows heavily from the previous book of ACT Tests pre 2014 changes called The Real ACT 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide), particularly in the math sections (more on this below) of tests 1-3 in this book only. That's kind of annoying, as it means you can't buy both books and get 10 tests. If you buy both you get more like 8 tests. I know the other one is out of print, but it would still be nice to be able to buy that book used and get even more tests to practice with in complete form. As time goes on, there are more tests in this book, and now 2 free pdfs of post 2014 tests (see below) available, so this is becoming less of an issue, but it’s still something. Finally, there is only one set of example essays for the essay section based on one prompt (not all the prompts that are paired with the tests). Students who really want to learn more about the essay may be left wanting more input. Now let’s first discuss what this includes:1) Five “real” ACT tests. The first four exams appear to be identical to the previous editions of this guide. I’ve noted the form codes these were sourced from below in case you know of these past exams.Test 1 (diagnostic): English, Reading, Science (Jun 2015 73C), Math (73C+10 random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mix of exams, and a few originals), (Code 16MC1)Test 2: English, Reading, Science (Apr 2015 73G), Math (random questions from The Real ACT Prep Guide exams, mostly from Exam #2, and a few originals), (Code 16MC2)Test 3 :English (Test 5 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Reading, Science (Test 4 from Real ACT Prep Guide), Math (Many from test 4 from the Real ACT Prep Guide, some random from that Guide, plus a few 73G questions and a few originals.) (Code 16MC3)Test 4: June 2017 Code 74C (Code 18MC4), all sectionsTest 5: Dec 2017 Code A10 (Code 19MC5), all sections2) Essay promptsAll tests include a complete essay prompt; a sixth prompt is in the chapter on the essay, for five total prompts.3) Chapters that review the basic content of each section and have some example questionsThough this might seem to be a great resource, advice from the test makers is rarely as good as advice from private tutors and people who didn’t also create the test itself. I’m probably biased (I’m a private tutor and develop ACT prep curriculum), but even before I wrote materials, I knew the best tips I found for my students weren’t from the test makers. Ideas like “read carefully and thoroughly," are terrible advice for some students who when doing so can’t even finish half of a section. Many students are better off FINISHING than reading everything carefully. True, the book also has pacing strategies, but they aren’t written based on people who are on the ground with students trying to help them exploit test weaknesses or maximize scores. Sure, in an ideal world we we be good little students and do everything the “right” way, but real test prep is about optimization, not being a “good student.” It’s about working within the constraints of the test and maximizing your ability to get questions right. The idea that some students are different and your strategy may be different from someone else’s isn’t really accounted for here in a clear way. The voice of the book feels more objective than insightful in its advice. The biggest value of this book is the real tests, not the section advice. If you want test prep advice, get another book or two from an independent tutor. Still, content tips in the English and Math could be somewhat useful for those with no other resources or limited budgets, and answer explanations may still be enough for those skilled at self assessment to make progress.ALSO: Many of the “real” examples from these topic based chapters are part of fully released exams from prior years, such as 61C (the packet released free of charge in 2008-2009). As a result, the example material is not a huge boon for students, but actual a bit of a "spoiler" for anyone who digs up these old, free, released pdf tests online and wants to use them to practice full exams.4) General information about the test that details registering, planning and packing for test day.Can you get all this for free from the ACT website, probably. But this information is good to have from the source of the test in any case.If you’re looking to maximize your access to REAL materials, here are your other options:1) Upgrade to the The Official ACT Prep Pack with 7 Full Practice Tests (5 in Official ACT Prep Guide + 2 Online) and get access to two online tests in addition to the five tests in the book. Practicing online, though, is not ideal if you’re taking this on paper. (See my note above) (ACT now offers a small percentage of test takers the opportunity to take the test on computers, but I don’t recommend doing so; If you’re located internationally, though, you must take the ACT on a computer and then I definitely suggest this option over the book alone).2) Get a used copy of the The Real ACT (CD) 3rd Edition (Official Act Prep Guide) in addition to this book. You’ll likely want to skip most of the math sections except for anecdotal practice (particularly tests 4 and 2 which show up heavily on the math section of the newer book), but other sections are useful. Know that the reading has no dual passages, and that the science has more passages but the same number of questions. Also, avoid English test #5, and Science and Reading test #4, as these are identical to test #3 in the Official Guide you would get from this page.3) Find the previously released free exams that ACT.org has offered students from prior years (note some may date from before the test tweaks in 2014):There is one free right now at ACT's site (2018-2019 practice test, Code 74F PRE),A second “online” edition free for international students at ACT.orgThe 2017-2018 pdf practice test Code 72C PRE is also floating around on the internet,And many sites have cataloged even older editions (2014-2015, 2011-2012, and 2008-2009) of the Preparing for the ACT packet. A quick online search for Free PDF ACT practice tests or "Preparing for the ACT" pdf should help you find some of these.Overall:Get this for the tests (you can't beat real tests!). Go over your mistakes and learn from them!Skip most of the chapter advice by topic (Math, Science, Reading, etc.) unless you can't afford more books or alternate options.Online materials are ok but not perfect.Note on the KINDLE EDITION: I've also purchased the Kindle version. It is improved from the previous Kindle version (2018-2019) so it is no longer extremely illegible on the portions of the book that are practice tests. Still, you can't zoom in on these pages at all and the quality is not the best, but it is useable now. I do not recommend the Kindle version unless you are taking the exam on a computer. Else a hard copy is just a better bet. See photo for images. The other thing is I can't find the code for the online resources in the Kindle Edition. There is a disclaimer at the beginning that tells you to go to a website if you are missing digital assets that come with the hardcopy but the ISBN for this book doesn't bring anything up on that site as of yet. You could probably email Wiley and get access (I actually have contacted them before for other issues and they're pretty responsive), but still something to note. One extra test, lower price I am a private tutor and author of Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT, Second Edition. I encourage my students to take as many practice tests as possible and these tests are simply the best available. The ACT continues to be a printed only test with a bubble sheet in the vast majority of locations, so I discourage students from taking practice tests online. This new edition of official ACT practice tests contains one more test than the previous edition (the books otherwise have the same content). Its price is $4.04 lower than the previous edition (as of May 7, 2019), so if you want to buy a book of official practice tests this is the edition to buy. This review is four stars because the ACT book of practice tests has fewer tests than the comparable SAT book (5 versus 8) and it is priced $2.96 higher (as of May 7, 2019). Like many tutors, I have been waiting for more tests, better content and a lower price for a long time, and it looks like I have to wait a while longer.
