Keith Gave, always a terrific reporter, had a front row seat to the most fascinating and colorful chapter of Red Wings history – the Russian Five. At times, he was smack in the middle of it, as an envoy, Russian-speaker and secret-keeper. No one could write this story with the detail, depth and understanding that Gave delivers. The result is a whirlwind story that is at times fantastical, gripping, emotional and even humorous. This book was a long time in the making, but well worth the wait. - Mitch Albom, columnist, Detroit Free PressKeith Gave spent six years in the United States Army as a Russian linguist working for the National Security Agency during the Cold War. Nothing could have better prepared him for a career as a sports writer covering hockey for the Detroit Free Press. His 15 years with the newspaper were the highlight of a career spanning nearly four decades in the news industry. He also served as writer/producer for the soon-to-be-released documentary film, “The Russian Five.” He lives in Roscommon, Michigan, where he continues to write when he’s not sneaking off to cast a fly to the trout on his home waters of the Au Sable River.

When the Detroit Red Wings were rebooting their franchise after more than two decades of relative futility, they knew the best place to find world-class players who could help turn things around more quickly were conscripted servants behind the Iron Curtain.

All they had to do then was make history by drafting them, then figure out how to get them out. That’s when the Wings turned to Keith Gave, the newsman whose clandestine mission to Helsinki, Finland, was the first phase of a of a years-long series of secret meetings from posh hotel rooms to remote forests around Europe to orchestrate their unlawful departures from the Soviet Union.

One defection created an international incident and made global headlines. Another player faked cancer, thanks to the Wings’ extravagant bribes to Russian doctors, including a big American car. Another player who wasn’t quite ready to leave yet felt like he was being kidnapped by an unscrupulous agent. Two others were outcast when they stood up publicly against the Soviet regime, winning their freedom to play in the NHL only after years of struggle.

They are the Russian Five: Sergei Fedorov, Viacheslav Fetisov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov. Their individual stories read like pulse-pounding spy novels. The story that unfolded after they were brought together in Detroit by the masterful coach Scotty Bowman is unforgettable.

This story includes details never before revealed, and by the man who was there every step of the way – from the day Detroit drafted its first two Soviets in 1989 until they raised the Stanley Cup in 1997, then took it to Moscow for a victory lap around Red Square and the Kremlin.

The Russian Five did more to bridge Russian and American relations than decades of diplomacy and détente between the White House and the Kremlin. This is their story.

Incredible storytelling. Insightful accounting of how hockey has been forever changed! This is a wonderful book. Fantastic storytelling. A great read for fans of hockey who appreciate the history of the game. Keith Gave does a great job telling the stories of the individual members of the Russian Five, and then weaving them together to illustrate how they changed the game of hockey -- how it's played, and how it's now taught in both North America and internationally.Gave's first-hand, behind-the-scenes accounting of defections, deceptions and even tragedies was edge-of-your-seat material. His telling of how the Russian Five earned the love and respect of their teammates, and then helped break down barriers and misperceptions between North American, European and Russian players, will warm even the coldest of Cold War hearts.Detailed, you-are-there account of one of the greatest sports stories of the last 50 years. An interweaving tale of five brilliant hockey players from the Soviet Union, brought to Detroit to help end a 40 year championship drought, and their lasting professional and personal impact on the ice hockey world. From the incredible daring-do of midnight clandestine meetings and defections to escape the iron curtain, through their revolutionary play on the ice, to the men behind the jerseys, Keith Gave delivers the complete story of the NHL Detroit Red Wings' legendary Russian Five.Author Keith Gave reveals how his own clandestine background, a new owner's unflinching drive to put together a championship hockey team, and five extraordinarily talented but seemingly out-of-reach Soviet players worked together to create a revolutionary and lasting imprint on the NHL. Read how ties to the Miracle On Ice, the dominating Red Army hockey machine, incredible skill and personal perseverance - together with extraordinary leadership - enabled the Russian Five to help bring the Stanley Cup to Detroit in the late 1990s.Author Gave's warm telling of this story of triumph, and legitimate tragedy, is (of course) a must-read for hockey fans. This story rises beyond sport, however, with political intrigue, life-changing injuries, and human relationships playing key roles. Highly recommended. This story is an important part of my life. ... This story is an important part of my life. I ordered it because Keith Gave wrote it. Also admired his work during his time with the paper. I was willing to accept an average treatment. I've read other books related to the Wings (Mike Babcock's for example) that were amateurish. Not only was the writing exemplary, the story was crafted in spellbinding fashion. Thanks to Mr. Gave I lost three hours of sleep because I couldn't put it down until I finished the book. I'm adding it to my top ten sports books.
