Title: At Wit's End Pdf
"America's irrepressible doyenne of domestic satire."
THE BOSTON GLOBE

Madcap, bittersweet humor in classic Erma Bombeck-style. You'll laugh until it hurts and love it! "Any mother with half a skull knows that when Daddy's little boy becomes Mommy's little boy, the kid is so wet, he's treading water. What do you mean you're a participle in the school play and you need a costume? Those rotten kids. If only they'd let me wake up in my own way. Why do they have to line up along my bed and stare at me like Moby Dick just washed up onto a beach somewhere?"

Hilarious This book is set in the 1950's middle class suburbia and is filled with domestic humor. It is still relevant and funny today as it was when written. Women still face these same challenges even after all of the progress since this time period. A must read for all mothers and wives.Erma introduces uplifting humor and a wonderful perspective to those who need a psychological lift. Whenever a friend is ill or in the hospital, I send them Erma Bombeck paperback books because of Erma's wonderful humor and perspective on the problems of life. I highly recommend Erma Bombeck's paperback books as a creative gift for friends who need HUMOR and a PERSPECTIVE to their problems.Great humorist tells the truth about family life in a delightful way. Very funny book by long time columnist who wrote delightful vignettes about family life.

Title: Brave Enough Pdf

"Jessie Diggins was a world-class athlete long before she became an Olympic gold medalist. In Brave Enough, she shows world-class courage by sharing the truth about her eating disorder, her therapy, and the multitude of challenges, doubts, fears, and assorted bogeymen that are so often an untold part of the journey to greatness. She deserves another gold medal for her honesty and her inspiration."—Wayne Coffey, New York Times bestselling author of The Boys of Winter"I’m honored to have played a role in inspiring Jessie on her journey to Olympic Gold. Brave Enough is a befitting title for this brutally honest and powerful story. As an athlete, Jessie was brave enough to win on the world’s biggest sporting stage. As a writer, she is brave enough to share a raw, heart-wrenching, nothing-held-back look at the struggles she went through to succeed. It’s an inspiring story, worthy of gold."—Jackie Joyner-Kersee"Already an inspiration to us all, Jessie once again shows her courage to leave it all on the track by sharing her deeply personal story. Readers will be encouraged by how one woman created a path forward for herself—and helped and uplifted so many in the process."—Ann Bancroft"Brave Enough is a powerful story that shows that striving for excellence can be essential in sport, yet not even Olympic champions are immune from its unforeseen destructive consequences. With admirable vulnerability, Jessie demonstrates how to be a leader and ‘best teammate’ while also being open to help and support from others. Her story motivates all of us, and she gives us hope and real tools to tackle our biggest challenges. I have never been more proud of my teammate and friend . . . not only has Jessie defeated foes on the race trails but she has courageously conquered the demons in her mind to become a true champion. She is an inspiration for everyone!"—Kikkan Randall, Olympic Champion and World ChampionJessie Diggins was raised in Afton, Minnesota, and became a professional skier at the age of nineteen. A two-time Olympian and four-time World Championship medalist, she is the most decorated U.S. cross-country athlete in World Championship history. She and teammate Kikkan Randall became the first Olympic Gold medalists in U.S. cross country history in the 2018 PyeongChang team sprint. She resides at least part time in Stratton, Vermont, where she is a member of the Stratton Mountain School T2 elite team.Todd Smith is author of Hockey Strong. His sportswriting has contributed to Minnesota Hockey, USA Hockey, and the Minnesota Wild on the NHL Network. His work has been published in The Rake Magazine, Minnesota Monthly, and Twin Cities METRO Magazine, and he has been a commentator on Minnesota Public Radio’s 89.3 The Current and WCCO Radio.

Travel with Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins on her compelling journey from America’s heartland to international sports history, navigating challenges and triumphs with rugged grit and a splash of glitter

Pyeongchang, February 21, 2018. In the nerve-racking final seconds of the women’s team sprint freestyle race, Jessie Diggins dug deep. Blowing past two of the best sprinters in the world, she stretched her ski boot across the finish line and lunged straight into Olympic immortality: the first ever cross-country skiing gold medal for the United States at the Winter Games. The 26-year-old Diggins, a four-time World Championship medalist, was literally a world away from the small town of Afton, Minnesota, where she first strapped on skis. Yet, for all her history-making achievements, she had never strayed far from the scrappy 12-year-old who had insisted on portaging her own canoe through the wilderness, yelling happily under the unwieldy weight on her shoulders: “Look! I’m doing it!”

In Brave Enough, Jessie Diggins reveals the true story of her journey from the American Midwest into sports history. With candid charm and characteristic grit, she connects the dots from her free-spirited upbringing in the woods of Minnesota to racing in the bright spotlights of the Olympics. Going far beyond stories of races and ribbons, she describes the challenges and frustrations of becoming a serious athlete; learning how to push through and beyond physical and psychological limits; and the intense pressure of competing at the highest levels. She openly shares her harrowing struggle with bulimia, recounting both the adversity and how she healed from it in order to bring hope and understanding to others experiencing eating disorders.

Between thrilling accounts of moments of triumph, Diggins shows the determination it takes to get there—the struggles and disappointments, the fun and the hard work, and the importance of listening to that small, fierce voice: I can do it. I am brave enough.

That Will Never Work Pdf

ISBN: 0316530204
Title: That Will Never Work Pdf The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea
Author: Marc Randolph
Published Date: 2019-09-17
Page: 336

"Engaging and insightful"―Reed Hastings, CEO of NetflixMarc Randolph is the co-founder of Netflix, serving as their founding CEO, the executive producer of their website, and a member of their board of directors until his retirement in 2004. Although best known for starting Netflix, Marc's career as Silicon Valley entrepreneur spans more than four decades. He's founded or co-founded more than half a dozen other successful start-ups, mentored rising entrepreneurs, and invested in numerous successful tech ventures. He speaks frequently to companies and at industry events nationally and internationally. He lives in Santa Cruz, California.

In the tradition of Phil Knight's Shoe Dog comes the incredible untold story of how Netflix went from concept to company-all revealed by co-founder and first CEO Marc Randolph.

Once upon a time, brick-and-mortar video stores were king. Late fees were ubiquitous, video-streaming unheard was of, and widespread DVD adoption seemed about as imminent as flying cars. Indeed, these were the widely accepted laws of the land in 1997, when Marc Randolph had an idea. It was a simple thought-leveraging the internet to rent movies-and was just one of many more and far worse proposals, like personalized baseball bats and a shampoo delivery service, that Randolph would pitch to his business partner, Reed Hastings, on their commute to work each morning.

But Hastings was intrigued, and the pair-with Hastings as the primary investor and Randolph as the CEO-founded a company. Now with over 150 million subscribers, Netflix's triumph feels inevitable, but the twenty first century's most disruptive start up began with few believers and calamity at every turn. From having to pitch his own mother on being an early investor, to the motel conference room that served as a first office, to server crashes on launch day, to the now-infamous meeting when Netflix brass pitched Blockbuster to acquire them, Marc Randolph's transformational journey exemplifies how anyone with grit, gut instincts and determination can change the world-even with an idea that many think will never work.

What emerges, though, isn't just the inside story of one of the world's most iconic companies. Full of counter-intuitive concepts and written in binge-worthy prose, it answers some of our most fundamental questions about taking that leap of faith in business or in life: How do you begin? How do you weather disappointment and failure? How do you deal with success? What even is success?

From idea generation to team building to knowing when it's time to let go, That Will Never Work is not only the ultimate follow-your-dreams parable, but also one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.

Forensics Free Pdf

ISBN: B00PSSG3UK
Title: Forensics Pdf What Bugs, Burns, Prints, DNA, and More Tell Us About Crime
Bestselling author of Broken Ground “offers fascinating glimpses” into the real world of criminal forensics from its beginnings to the modern day (The Boston Globe).

The dead can tell us all about themselves: where they came from, how they lived, how they died, and, of course, who killed them. Using the messages left by a corpse, a crime scene, or the faintest of human traces, forensic scientists unlock the mysteries of the past and serve justice. In Forensics, international bestselling crime author Val McDermid guides readers through this field, drawing on interviews with top-level professionals, ground-breaking research, and her own experiences on the scene.

Along the way, McDermid discovers how maggots collected from a corpse can help determine one’s time of death; how a DNA trace a millionth the size of a grain of salt can be used to convict a killer; and how a team of young Argentine scientists led by a maverick American anthropologist were able to uncover the victims of a genocide.

Prepare to travel to war zones, fire scenes, and autopsy suites as McDermid comes into contact with both extraordinary bravery and wickedness, tracing the history of forensics from its earliest beginnings to the cutting-edge science of the modern day.

Tasty, but not filling. This is an entry level text, which offers about the same amount of information as if you sat down and watched a season or two of a police procedural drama. I had a distinct impression that I was following a passionate curator through a museum. Ms. McDermid draws us in and intrigues us with the histories and capabilities of various investigative techniques, while having the diligence and courage to temper those tales with knowledge of their shortcomings. There's significant value in the author's rigor, but this book left me wanting. Some of this is likely my fault because I'd prefer to wander through the reeds of minutiae of each specialty. At least a little bit it's because the author doesn't very well wrap up each segment, so I had a bunch of "What happened after that?!" moments.'Forensics' does serve as a launchpad for further reading, and for that reason I'll probably suggest it to others with relevant interests.A good starting point... I teach physiology and pathophysiology, and so I'm kind of interested in the opposite of these classes, which would be forensics. I often have to talk about muscles and how they work while people are alive, so it is paramount that I understand how these things work when they are dead (such as rigor mortis). I've read a couple of forensic books before, but I found this one fascinating. It's written by someone from Great Britain, but I found the information shared from over there on various cases and how forensics helped to solve some of these cases. The author of this book apparently writes crime fiction, which I enjoy once in a while...but this book is a good introduction to the field of forensics. The writing is very understandable, and there isn't an overload of science in it which might confuse some readers. Like other reviewers said, she has a nicely conversational style.I personally will look for something with more of the science in it. I wasn't expecting a book loaded with scientific information, so I wasn't disappointed. I've learned to read the reviews of other readers so that doesn't happen to me. On the whole, a good basic book on forensics to start out with.Good book for the newbie Having read a fair amount on poisons and chemistry in general, some of this was repetitious. When she dealt with specifics, such as criminals, evidence, courtroom actions, I found it quite interesting. I learned more about our justice system than any other one thing; I've worked with inmates for years and should have listened when they wanted to talk about their lawyers and the court system.

The First Girl Child Download

ISBN: B07KPD6NHN
Title: The First Girl Child Pdf

From the New York Times bestselling author comes a breathtaking fantasy of a cursed kingdom, warring clans, and unexpected salvation.

Bayr of Saylok, bastard son of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by the curse once leveled by his dying mother. Bartered, abandoned, and rarely loved, she plagued the land with her words: From this day forward, there will be no daughters in Saylok.

Raised among the Keepers at Temple Hill, Bayr is gifted with inhuman strength. But he’s also blessed with an all-too-human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first girl child born in nearly two decades and the salvation for a country at risk.

Now the fate of Saylok lies with Alba and Bayr, whose bond grows deeper with every whisper of coming chaos. Charged with battling the enemies of their people, both within and without, Bayr is fueled further by the love of a girl who has defied the scourge of Saylok.

What Bayr and Alba don’t know is that they each threaten the king, a greedy man who built his throne on lies, murder, and betrayal. There is only one way to defend their land from the corruption that has overtaken it. By breaking the curse, they could defeat the king…but they could also destroy themselves.

A breathtaking story, one I will never forget! Amy Harmon is one of my go to authors. In a reading slump – read one of her books, need the comfort of a familiar book – read one your favorite one, looking to read a new genre – read one of her books. Amy has the ability to smoothly write whatever genre she wants and it will be fantastic, not only will you learn new things, but your mind will spend days working out all the details and nuances of the story. In typical fashion, she spends time setting the stunning scene for the intense emotions that you are going to feel. I think she is being gracious, letting it all creep on you, before it suddenly hits you in the face! Yes, I cried… that’s all I’m going to say about my emotions.Set in Saylok, this rich land is filled with clans, magical runes and warriors, who for many years have been unable to produce daughters, causing chaos of all kinds! Bayr, who you can’t help love, as his gentle nature balances out his out of this world strength. Alba is fierce, determined and very compassionate! Love is weaves its way through this story, touching all that are in its path - it’s slow build up is completely consuming!Dagmar and Ghost, are much more than “side” characters, time and time again they show sacrificial love for those in their care, and their friendship is one to remember! And their pain and heartache cause so much of the beauty of this epic story to shine through. “Because the beauty of the fall was worth the pain of landing”.This story hits all the spots – warriors, magic, love, battles and salvation for a nation coming from likely and unlikely heroes! My frustration is that I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave Saylok - I love Bayr, Alba, Dagmar, Ghost and this gorgeous fantasy world, they have a piece of my heart! One of my top reads for 2019! My thoughts are swirling all around as I sit here trying to write this review. First and foremost I loved this story. Amy has the most amazing way of crafting a story and pulling the reader headfirst into this world she creates every time she picks up her pen.Having read her other fantasy books, The Bird and the Sword and The Queen and the Cure, I already knew she would be taking me on a journey that would be unlike anything I've experienced before. The characters, the scenery, the life and culture, the beliefs and customs, all of it was crafted so intricately that I lost myself in the pages of this book. There were several characters that I absolutely fell in love with in this book and several that I despised, but that is the way of the world no matter if the story is told from a long ago past or current day. The life the characters lived in this time and place were often very unforgiving and I found myself wanting to wrap them up and keep them safe. As is often the case when reading Amy's books, even when she is breaking your heart she does so in a way that helps you understand that this is exactly how this story has to be told and even through my tears I found myself smiling for all the things that made it such a beautifully woven tale.I honestly would love to sit down with Amy and ask her how she comes up with these stories, not just the basic plot but ALL that comes with it like the scenery and the emotions and the pyschology of it. She writes some of the most complete tales I have ever read.I have purposely been vague about the actual story and what occurs, and that is because you need to start this story with no preconceived notions or spoilers that could influence your opinion one way or another. Just go in blind and experience Amy's magic roll across the pages.Another amazing story! I so hope and pray that we will get more books from Amy and the land of Saylock!

Free History BONUS Inside!

Japan is one of the most adaptable countries in the world. It is capable of very rapid change, even after crises that would halt the progress of other nations. When the shogunates collapsed in the 17th century, the feudal system disintegrated. Within a year’s time, though, railroads replaced ox carts. During World War I, a first-rate economy sprung up on deserted farmlands. During World War II, the modest islands of Japan burgeoned into an empire with one of the most powerful navies in the world. After the devastation of that world war, Japan emerged as one of the most modern countries in the world. The Japanese have survived frequent earthquakes and tsunamis and rebuilt their cities using enviable technologies.

The Japanese progressed throughout the eras because of the emperor, but they also progressed despite him. These are people who never let go of their sacred history, and their story is told and retold in art, film, literature, and even graphic novels across the entire world. Terms such as shoguns, samurai, haiku, anime, and manga are familiar to many in the Western world today. Westerners also learn flower arranging, martial arts, meditation, and enjoy a variety of visual and digital art forms because of the unique culture of Japan.

In History of Japan: A Captivating Guide to Japanese History, Including Events Such as the Genpei War, Mongol Invasions, Battle of Tsushima, and Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, you will discover topics such as
  • Children of the Sun
  • Warring Clans
  • The Two Imperial Courts
  • Edo Japan: Part One-1603 to 1638
  • Edo Period: Part Two-1638 to 1868
  • The Meiji Restoration

Interesting This book held my attention. With all the information that was included in this book I learned so much. I didn't know anything about the history of the Japanese and was amazed by it. I was somewhat familiar with parts of their history during WWII but not everything about that time period.A greater insight! I found the HISTORY OF JAPAN to be very informative and interesting as are all the Captivating History books. It complimented my college class of Asian History and gave me some bits of history that I haven't seen before.Interesting, although.... While interesting - I found this one more of a challenge to read than the usually fascinating Captivating History books…. Telling the story does not flow comfortably, and some of the wording is awkward. The early history became a bit of a struggle to wade through. One can appreciate the depth and range of research required; and the challenge to cover an extended period of complex situations, however….!The Japanese certainly had an underlying vicious tendency - which was referenced in the early days - and highlighted during the dubious conflict in China - but: no reference of similar traits during WWII….?
