Title: Into Thin Air Pdf A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
Into Thin Air is the definitive, personal account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed journalist and author of Eiger Dreams and Into the Wild. On assignment for Outside magazine, Krakauer, an accomplished climber, went to the Himalayas to report on the growing commercialization of the planet's highest mountain. Everest has always been a dangerous mountain. From the first British expeditions in the 1920s until 1996, one climber has died for ever 4 who have attained the summit. This shocking death toll has not put a damper on the burgeoning business of guided ascents, however, in which amateur alpinists with alarmingly disparate skills are ushered up the mountain for a $65,000 fee. To ascend into the thin, frigid air above 26,000 feet - the cruising altitude of a commercial jetliner - is an inherently irrational act. The environment is unimaginably harsh, the margin for error miniscule. Krakauer examines what it is about Everest that has compelled so many people - including himself - to throw caution to the wind, ignore the concern of loved ones, and willingly subject themselves to such risk, hardship, and expense. Written with emotional clarity and supported by his unimpeachable reporting, Krakauer's frank eyewitness account of what happened on the roof of the world is a singular achievement.

This book is amazing I was inspired to read Into Thin Air just recently based solely on Jon Krakauer's comments about the upcoming Everest movie, having suggested people read his book instead. Although I wasn't initially sold by an author promoting his own book, and slighting a movie he hadn't profited on, it did pique my interest in the events that transpired in 1996 and the magazine article that preceded. I found the article absolutely riveting, breezing through in one sitting. I spent the following few days seeking out everything else I cold find published about the incident, at which point I decided to do as Krakauer instructed. The book was exceptional; I couldn't put it down and finished it in two sittings over two days. I would highly suggest finding/reading the PDF article from Outside Magazine online first...if you like that, you will love the book.A case of murderous reportage Into Thin Air s such a riveting read that it deserves five stars, and a permanent place on my overcrowded shelves. However, I must note that the book itself - or rather, the Outlook article which was responsible for Krakauer's presence on this expedition in the first place - is the real reason so many people died on the mountain that day. Had the expedition leaders not been competing for the attention of Outlook readers, this probably would not have happened; they were seasoned veterans of the mountain and would not, I am sure, made such an elementary mistake as not turning back by the agreed hour. This proved fatal for several people. Krakauer, to his eternal shame, tried to blame this debacle on the other group's Russian guide. Who, as he admits, went out in a blizzard on his own to save his clients and brought them down single-handed. And showed a lot more empathy than Krakauer himself. That said, I have read no book on mountaineering that better describes the emotions and physical sensations of being in this punishing environment. f you want a powerful 'Rashomon' tale for our times, read this book in tandem with Anatoli Boukreev's /Weston DeWalt's The Climb. They depict the same story but with a very different perspective, and the story itself never gets anything less than fascinating.

Change is inevitable, we should give thought to how we view and treat with it I've always heard talk about this book being a "gem for change management" or "the best thing to help cope with a divorce" or even "a nice tool that aided me during times of depression". I recently bought it out of curiosity so i could read it on a flight and I was not disappointed.Change is everywhere and change is constantly happening, we can either wait for circumstances to bring our comfort zone back to us or we can be proactive and seek to behave in a manner that keeps our comfort zone with us at all times. There is a lot more I can say about this book and almost all of it has surely been said already, so I'll just go with this: Buy this book, even if you do not think you need it, I am positive that there is someone else in your life who probably does.Quick read that can change your perspective As a 50 something in corporate world, I have come to dread and loathe change. I saw it as a challenge to my stability and welfare. Now I have a much better outlook on it. I see that change in necessary and that not only do I have to keep up, I CAN keep up. By breaking the chains of negative thinking I have liberated my mind to possibilities.they only thing I did not care for was the conversation after the story. I get it, for those who need a practical application of a radical idea. But I found it annoying.Change is scary but it absolutely was necessary for me in order to find my true happiness This quick read is life-changing for me. I have changed so much as an individual and lost family and friends along my journey of self-discovery. So this book has helped me pinpoint within myself what I have done for myself and for my immediate family in becoming a man, a better person, and realizing my own dreams of being happy, not dealing with drama or any kind of BS. So much change has definitely happened in my life but the constants that make me most happy have always been my wife, my mother-in-law and my amazing kids. Highly recommend this read for not just an eye-opener, but to give you some solace in why you may have lost family or friends and in realizing that the change most likely comes from within and is justifiable and okay.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THESKIMM

Nina Browning is living the good life after marrying into Nashville’s elite. More recently, her husband made a fortune selling his tech business, and their adored son has been accepted to Princeton.

Yet sometimes the middle-class small-town girl in Nina wonders if she’s strayed from the person she once was.

Tom Volpe is a single dad working multiple jobs while struggling to raise his headstrong daughter, Lyla. His road has been lonely, long, and hard, but he finally starts to relax after Lyla earns a scholarship to Windsor Academy, Nashville’s most prestigious private school.

Amid so much wealth and privilege, Lyla doesn’t always fit in—and her overprotective father doesn’t help—but in most ways, she’s a typical teenaged girl, happy and thriving.

Then, one photograph, snapped in a drunken moment at a party, changes everything. As the image spreads like wildfire, the Windsor community is instantly polarized, buzzing with controversy and assigning blame.

At the heart of the lies and scandal, Tom, Nina, and Lyla are forced together—all questioning their closest relationships, asking themselves who they really are, and searching for the courage to live a life of true meaning.

Tom is desperately trying to be a good father to Lyla Summary:Have you ever stopped and wondered how you got somewhere? With this man, living this life? Nina Browning should be ecstatic. She is part of the Nashville elite with a charismatic husband and a son that was just accepted into Princeton. It all seems wrong, though. The preoccupation with material wealth, the inability to really connect with her husband or son… this just isn’t who she is. Any of it.Tom is desperately trying to be a good father to Lyla, his beautiful and intelligent daughter. When she got a scholarship to Windsor Academy he is a bit worried, but very proud. Lyla is trying to keep up with her classmates both academically and socially. It’s a different world and sometimes the differences are glaring.A picture snapped in a moment of drunkenness spins out of control. Windsor Academy is going insane with rumors and casting blame. In the eye of the scandal are Tom, Lyla and Nina. Each one is forced to question the relationships of those closest to them, and who they really are.My thoughts:I could not put this book down. It was gorgeously written, and moving. The trio of narratives was an interesting touch. I really enjoyed being able to see more of these characters, their thoughts and motives. These were really interesting, well developed characters. I loved Lyla especially. Tom with the chip on his shoulder and Nina who desperately wants to be seen as a good woman. As far as the plot goes, I found it really intriguing and I loved the different twists and turns that kept me guessing. Through out the book I both loathed and loved certain characters, wanting to believe in them, but not knowing if I can. It’s definitely a different world. I also like how they portrayed the young victim- it was very believable. The horror, shame, inability to believe, and the desire to let it all just fade away. Her strength was also something I really loved. I feel like this book has a lot of adult moments, but also a lot that older teens would like as well. For me, this is a five star book.On the adult content scale, this is pretty high. There’s a lot of language and sexual content as well as drinking. While I would, as I said, see no issue with an older and more mature teen reading it, I have to say it’s meant for adults. I give it an eight.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Random House Publishing in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!Decent Plot, Overkill With Political Bias I was sadly disappointed with this novel. I usually adore Emily Giffins work, but not so much with this one. It WAS a good storyline that had me finishing in about 3 days. But there was just so much political vomit! I felt as though Giffin was attempting to sway the reader into viewing most, if not all, wealthy, conservative/republican white people (which I am far from) as low-key racists, sexists philanderers who only look out for number 1 at ANY cost. I understand the want/need to be able to relate to readers & to stay relevant, but it just felt to me that Giffin overly interjected her own political bias. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the ending seem rushed & there was no REAL closer given everything that happened as the plot unfolded, just a few references in the epilogue. Many questions are left unanswered.and the character development was progressing along nicely, but then all of a sudden The story was interesting, and the character development was progressing along nicely, but then all of a sudden, it's like someone told Emily Giffin "you need to wrap this up", and everything sped up dramatically! It felt very rushed in the later half of the book.

From acclaimed author Dr. Jason Fung, a revolutionary guide to reversing diabetes.

Dr. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity with his best-selling book, The Obesity Code. Now he has set out to do the same for type 2 diabetes.

Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease―a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting―not medication.

If you only ever read one book for Diabetes this ... If you only ever read one book for Diabetes this is it. I was diagnosed wth Diabeties 16 years ago and wish I had this book then. Although I have controlled it with a low carb diet I have still occasionally suffered from symptoms that I associate with Diabetes side effects. I have been following Dr. Fung with fasting over the last few months loosing 30lbs but this book really put it all together for me. I can’t tell you how grateful l am for all the effort and work he has put into this. It was an eye opener in so many ways, explaining the disease in ways I have never heard before but makes absolute sense. Dr. Fung I cant thank you enough.Jason Fung changed my life and I have never met him. First let me start off saying I am a dialysis nurse and I have never been diagnosed with diabetes.I was a 307 lb dialysis nurse with a bmi of 40.5.I was browsing my youtube feed and a lecture by Dr Fung popped up and I watched and I changed my diet and incorporated two 36 hour fasts per week. Now 95lbs lost later...I was never diagnosed with DM2 but my fasting blood glucose was 104 when I began doing this and now it is in the 60s with no noticeable symptoms. Looking back I think I was for sure headed for a diagnosis of diabetes. My patients constantly ask if I can help them lose weight and I can only recommend this book along with The Obesity Code. (I also advise them to consult their physician before beginning any dietary modifications due to the likelihood most of them are taking some type of diabetic medication.)The advice Dr Fung gives in this book and The Obesity Code changed my life.• Took BP meds for over 20 years and now none.• Had chronic low T levels and at one time was taking injections every other week (got sick of the injections so quite taking them) now t level has normalized.• I have chronic joint pain from osteoarthritis that I was taking copious amounts of NSAIDs before and now I hardly ever need them.I purchased this book with the hope that I could pass it along to my patients. My only problem is as great as this book is I think it is not written for the average person. I also understand that as complicated of a subject like diabetes is it would be difficult to present this stuff in a more average reader friendly way.Don't get me wrong though I'm still out there singing those praises...Thank you Dr Fung.I reversed my diabetes with this book! First week of March I was diagnosed with diabetes. My blood glucose at the time was 383 and my A1C was 11.6! I began researching diabetes and found videos of Dr. Jason Fung on YouTube. I bought both of his books, the obesity code and the diabetes code the day it was released for sale. I began the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. I just received my new lab results today. In just 7 weeks my blood glucose is 120 and my A1C is 6.8!!! Thank you so much Dr. Fung for giving me the direction to reverse my diabetes!!! The Diabetes Code is a must have book for people living with diabetes!Update... Last week I had my A1C checked by my doctor. It is 5.6! This book works!
